The News Cycle is Broken, and We’re All to Blame
Look, I’ve been in this game for 20-some years. I’ve seen a lot of changes, but honestly, the news cycle right now? It’s completley bonkers. I’m not just saying that because I’m getting old and grumpy (okay, maybe a little). There’s a real problem here.
Back in the day, when I started at the Austin Chronicle, we had time to breathe. We’d dig into stories, talk to people, and actually make sense of things. Now? It’s a never-ending stream of hot takes and outrage bait.
I remember this one time, back in ’05, I think. We had a story about a local politician who’d gotten caught with his hand in the cookie jar. We took our time, talked to sources, and wrote a proper piece. Now? That story would break on Twitter at 11:30pm, and by morning, it’d be old news.
And don’t even get me started on the comment sections. I swear, half the people there just wanna yell at each other. It’s like a digital coliseum, and the news is just the backdrop for their performative outrage.
But Here’s the Thing…
It’s not all bad. There are still good journalists out there, doing good work. But they’re drowning in the noise. And honestly, we’re all to blame. Us, the media, for chasing clicks and views. And you, the audience, for consuming it.
I was talking to a friend of mine, let’s call him Marcus, the other day. He’s a teacher, right? And he’s seeing the same thing in his classroom. Kids can’t focus, can’t think critically, because they’re used to this constant stream of information. It’s like their brains are addicted to the news cycle.
Marcus said, “It’s like they’re mainlining dopamine, and they can’t stop.” Which… yeah. Fair enough.
So what do we do? I’m not sure. But I think the first step is admitting we have a problem. And maybe, just maybe, we can start to fix it.
Oh, and if you’re looking for a break from all this, you might wanna check out useful information daily tips. Trust me, sometimes you just need to get away from it all.
Anyway, I digress. The point is, the news cycle is broken. And it’s gonna take all of us to fix it.
But hey, that’s just my opinion. I could be wrong.
Probably am.
I mean, look at the state of things. What do I know?
A Quick Tangent: The Weather
You know what’s not broken? The weather. It just is what it is. You can’t argue with it, you can’t spin it. It’s just there. I wish the news could be more like the weather.
But no, we gotta turn everything into a drama. It’s exhausting.
Anyway, back to the point. Or not. I’m not sure anymore.
Honestly, I should probably wrap this up. I’ve rambled enough for one day.
But before I go, let me leave you with this thought: maybe, just maybe, we should all take a step back. Breathe. And remember that the news isn’t the most important thing in the world.
It’s important, sure. But it’s not everything.
And with that, I’m out. Take care of yourselves, folks.
